Phone charging port not working: what to check

Before you pay for a repair, check the cable, the adapter, the port, and two settings that stop charging at 80 percent.

Quick answer

Try another cable and adapter, and check them for damage. Look for lint or debris in the port. If it stops at 80 percent, that may be Optimized Battery Charging or a charge limit, not a fault. Still not charging with a good cable? The port may need a repair.

Check these first

  1. 1 of 4Check the cable and the adapter

Look for breaks or bent prongs. Apple says not to use damaged accessories. Try a different cable and adapter.

  2. 2 of 4Look inside the port

Apple says to remove any debris from the charging port on the bottom of the phone. Lint packs in tight: if it does not come out easily, bring it in.

  3. 3 of 4Stops at 80 percent?

That may be on purpose. Optimized Battery Charging can wait before charging past 80 percent, and iPhone 15 models and later can have a charge limit set.

    Settings Battery
  4. 4 of 4Says liquid is detected?

The port is wet. See Phone fell in water: what to do.

When it needs a repair

It charges only at an angle, the plug feels loose, or nothing works with a cable and adapter you know are good: the port likely needs a repair.
